Interview with Mark Spragg, owner of Auto Pro Paint & Supply

What does it take to operate a successful jobber store in this competitive industry, especially considering all the changes that have taken place over the past few years?
Transtar interviewed one of its customers, Auto Pro Paint & Supply located in Helotes, Texas (just outside of San Antonio) to understand the keys to a successful business.  Mark Spragg and his family have been in the PBE industry for over 30 years in both Michigan and Texas, and have owned and operated collision shops and jobber stores. When asked about the secret to his success, Mark didn’t hesitate to answer.
Mark wants to change the industry for the better and after being treated a certain way by jobbers based on the size of his collision shop, he knows exactly how he is going to operate his jobber store. Mark is proud of the way he treats his customers and conducts business and doesn’t see anyone as a paycheck. He decided to open a jobber store to provide better treatment to small shops and has already seen significant growth as a result of the best practices below.

  1. Equality - Treat everyone the same regardless of size. Mark offers the same price to every customer regardless of size. He knows the small shop is just as important as the large one, which he feels is unprecedented. No one is turned away!
  2. Dependability - His drivers deliver on time, someone is always available to answer the phone, and he’s always available to troubleshoot.  Mark’s jobber store will service the collision shops that are farther out and that no one else wants to drive to. Everyone is treated equal!
  3. Customer Service - He truly partners with his customers to help them grow and sometimes that means coming in early and staying late.  
  4. Offer High-Quality Products at a Great Price - He only sells quality products that help his customers keep money in their pockets.
